I was browsing Garance Dore's blog which I love, it's very kooky and cute and her photographs are beautiful, and up popped a photo of Taylor Tomasi Hill in two outfits I covet immensely! Not to mention her lovely red hair...
Aside from having a very cool name, Harland Miller paints a series of melancholy beautiful and very funny reimaginings of Penguin's old fashioned book covers.
For those of you who don't know what it is, Graze boxes are 'healthy food through the post'. All lovely nuts, dried fruits, crackers, some chocolate treats etc in a package that fits through your letter box weekly or fortnightly. Healthy foods to stop you snacking.

And you can get your first box free by using this code - http://www.graze.com/p/43X8JHG

My first box came with a punnet of chilli maize and satay broad beans that are the tastiest thing EVER! The dark chocolate covered cacao beans were pretty good too...
I love the way he uses light in his photographs.

Brassaï (Gyula Halász) (9 September 1899–8 July 1984) was a Hungarian photographer, sculptor, and filmmaker who rose to international fame in France in the 20th century. He was one of the numerous Hungarian artists who flourished in Paris beginning between the world wars.

Brassaï captured the essence of the city in his photographs, published as his first collection in 1933 book entitled Paris de nuit (Paris by Night). His book gained great success, resulting in his being called "the eye of Paris" in an essay by his friend Henry Miller. In addition to photos of the seedier side of Paris, Brassai portrayed scenes from the life of the city's high society, its intellectuals, its ballet, and the grand operas.

He was also friends with Picasso, Matisse and Dali.

This following photograph, captures (in a slightly more sinister, less attractive manner) something similar to the protagonist of one of my favourite novels Good Morning, Midnight. Though the protagonist of that novel has none of this photograph's hard swagger - the idea of sitting alone in a cafe in finery drinking pernod, certainly does.
I've always loved hummingbirds, but since seeing them I love them even more!

For Christmas I was given some Cuban stamps with humming birds on and recently found a frame large enough to make them into a necklace:

I have one more of these frames... wonder what I'll do with it...
I also brought back a stamp myself, somewhat accidentally through buying too many at the postoffice for postcards home! it's much littler than the other stamps and I'm still hoping to find the right frame for it.

More hummingbird things, the ring I ordered before Christmas has finally arrived! Hooray!
And finally here is my very own little wooden hummingbird crafted in the mountains of Cuba, only found in that one little craft market. It hangs from my kitchen cabinet. The photo's don't really capture it properly. In fact there's a nice story that goes with it. We passed through the craft market and thought the hummingbirds were beautiful, but as you know, you tend to get the same items as many markets and as we had to rush, we didn't stop. We then found out that you could only get them at that one particular market. We left our guide some money and asked her if she could get one and ask the next British family she took round to post them back in the UK (Cuban post is notoriously bad!). The hummingbirds are made to disassemble and have tiny pins to fit back together. Lo and behold, some months later a little package arrived!
I also had a wire wrapped slate pendant on the stall, which was made from slate I picked in on a tiny place in Wales called Corris. As it turned out the lady who bought the pendant knew Corris well! Along the way I picked up some little pieces of sea glass to see if I could make something from them. You can buy manufactured 'sea glass' which has been artificially tumbled, but to me that completely destroys the concept of it being tossed around on the sea bed and slowly reaching that misty prettiness. Obviously natural sea glass isn't uniform, so it's more difficult to work with. But it's worth it. I found some tiny little pieces which I have made into studs:
I just thought I'd share a little jewellery story with you. I posted off today 4 Cuban rings (the last of that size coin!) to a girl called Elisa and she very kindly said I could pass on her story.

Turns out she had a particular wish for buying one of the rings (other than it being pretty!) because her grandparents are Cuban. She requested, and I made, 3 more rings: one for her mother, and one each for her two aunts in memory of her grandmother who recently passed away. She says she hopes to visit Cuba one day.

I polished each coin and set them on ring blanks using a hardening resin. Once dry I re-polished to remove any excess resin and made sure each piece was perfect. I put them in their little organza bags and sent them off to America!

Previously I made one for a lady whose mother was Cuban and she said her mother would be so pleased to receive it as she hadn't been able to bring much with her to her new home.

I really love hearing about the new home my jewellery goes to.

And lastly I thought I'd just share with you soem pictures of a ring I bought from a market in Cuba. The ring is made from the handle of a spoon. I really like how it's chunky but also delicate and the idea of making something useful into an ornament - which sort of inspired me for the coin rings!
This one is made from a really beautiful Sri Lankan coin. I hand polished it and hung it between two delicate chains.
My etsy shop is currently in vacation mode while I restock - Christmas got a bit hectic with orders! But I have had some lovely new little charms delivered - gold teapot and rocking horse.

Right, something pretty to bring in the new year:

I absolutely covet this piece by dishfunctionldesigns, I'm not normally a fan of heart shaped jewellery, but I LOVE the figures:

This is a very eerie beautiful short film using silhouette art. Makes me want to do lots of silhouettes!

And finally some music:
The stand out item for me though are these earrings. The photograph is also so beautiful and the styling is excellent. Anyone looking to buy me a Christmas present you know where to look!

Feeling very christmassy at the moment, I made some salt dough ornaments that are waiting to be painted. Maybe when they're done I'll put some photos up.

Also hooray I broke the 1000 views mark today! Thanks!
Slightly different from the 1920s cameos, I loved the pose and dress of this ballerina from the Graphics Fairy but there were some bits I wasn't sure about! So I had a think and a chat with L. Stead and she drew the ballerina into a beautiful form! Now she's all lovely.
I visted Cuba this summer and it's such a beautiful and friendly country that I wanted to make a memento project from it, so I brought back a few coins to make jewellery from. This is now listed: http://www.artfire.com/users/rosesandhello and http://www.zibbet.com/rosesandhello and the new European shop which I'll talk about more below
So I thought I would write a post about her, because a lot of the thing I came across surprised me.

<span style="font-family: Times, "Times New Roman", serif;">What I associate with the brand 'Chanel' is elegance, luxury and expense. But that is only half the story. I should just add that I haven't seen the film 'Coco avant Chanel', but I'm guessing most people are familiar with the notion she is a rags to riches story. From orphanage taught to sew by nuns, to, arguably, one of the most recognisable fashion brands in the world. I was, however, her approach to fashion which surprised me.
<span style="font-family: Times, "Times New Roman", serif;">

<span style="font-family: Times, "Times New Roman", serif;">She is credited with being one of the first to oppose the 19th century silhouette doing away with thing like corsets and creating garments that were practice and easy to wear... not exactly what I think of Chanel for! But that was her campaign – using boyish shapes (the flapper dropped waist) and free flowing garments, her first Little Black Dress was known as ‘Chanel’s Ford’ for it’s simple lines and easy wearability.

She said that “Elegance is refusal”<span style="font-family: Times, "Times New Roman", serif;"> ie: simplicity is the best way and she carried this into her fashion design. She used embroidery and beads sewn on to create detail instead of the usual padding, lace and ruffles. She popularised costume jewellery and particularly the many strands of long pearls that are currently in fashion, apparently an odd number of strings was considered most elegant. And she counselled “Always take off the last accessory you put on” – less is more.

<span style="font-family: "Times New Roman", "serif"; font-size: 12pt; line-height: 115%;">Her views on luxury are also in opposition to the hedonism we usually associate with the 1920s, particularly in France the Ballet Russe etc. She said: <span style="font-family: OldNewspaperTypes; font-size: 12pt; line-height: 115%; mso-bidi-font-family: "Times New Roman";">“Some people think luxury is the opposite of poverty. It is not. It is the opposite of vulgarity”.

<span style="font-family: "Times New Roman", "serif"; font-size: 12pt; line-height: 115%;">And finally, of designing dresses she said: <span style="font-family: OldNewspaperTypes; font-size: 12pt; line-height: 115%; mso-bidi-font-family: "Times New Roman";">“look for the women in the dress, if there is no woman, there is no dress”. <span style="font-family: "Times New Roman", "serif"; font-size: 12pt; line-height: 115%;">This is something for anyone designing things to keep in mind, if you can’t imagine a person wearing it then something has gone astray.
Roses and Hellohttp://www.blogger.com/profile/06844699225144385830noreply@blogger.com2tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-7310700229242659613.post-21172016060884809742010-10-29T08:49:00.000-07:002010-10-29T08:53:12.586-07:00More 1920s Pendants So... Love the Ballet Russe sketch and the slouhcy cloche hat. The smoking flapper doll is creepy but amazing.
I loved going through and chosing the images from this set and I think L. Stead did an extraordinary job with them. These are really wonderful little framed pieces of art. I wont post too many pictures but you can see all of them (nearly all, there's 7 designs and 4 loaded at the moment) at these two sites - http://www.artfire.com/users/rosesandhello

http://www.zibbet.com/rosesandhello

I think this is a lovely idea.

As the 1010 Project mission statement explains,
"The 1010 project was devised as an antidote to everything in modern life always having to be bigger, better, louder and brighter than what’s been before.
"It’s an opportunity to slow down and appreciate the simple, everyday things that make life beautiful."

The photographs are from all over the world, London, Brighton, New York, Tokyo, Berlin, Algarve, Amsterdam, Stellenbosch, Melbourne

I like this one because it reminds me of the tiles that sit just under the front door step of nearly all the houses on a very long road I used to live on in Exeter. Really pretty little tiles that you hardly ever saw as you marched past, but once you looked, they were everywhere and each different. Though not quite as lovely as the ones in this photograph:

Drawing by Lisa Stead, taken from a vintage fashion postcard from The Graphics Fairy. the Graphics Fairy is a brilliant free resource and hopefully I'll soon be creating a post about some of the things you can find on the blog.

This is the final product after a fairly long process of putting it together. I always knew I wanted to do something like this, based on the tiny portraits in renaissance miniatures, but in the manner of film star glamour photographs and I think that effect was achieved.
It's photographed on a background of a vintage shirt that my lovely sister bought for me. The ruffles seemed to suit the Victoriana feel.

I would just like to put a word in for my sister and my two cousins who were endlessly helpful (and amusing) when trying to pick a name for all this and thinking up ideas. You lot are super cool and wonderful!

The next piece will be based on 1920s fashion illustrations from magazines. I found some brilliant pieces which are going to look amazing in the antique brass version of this frame.Roses and Hellohttp://www.blogger.com/profile/06844699225144385830noreply@blogger.com2
